My friends and mentors have been debating on a similar topic if AI (Artificial Intelligence) evolved to a major extent could it have legal rights? So I searched on the internet and found this so I thought it would be good to comment.
I'm not sure how to say this without being racist but I'll try my best which shouldn't be hard since I'm not racist but someone might get the wrong idea. All I am going to do is state some facts.
When ever the US constitution relates to someone they say "person"
I have checked with 10 dictionaries and all of them say within there meanings the following:
A living human. Often used in combination: chairperson; spokesperson; salesperson.
At the time when the US constitution was being drafted it did not consider other beings, at the time they still didn't treat people with a different skin colour with respect.
In the Bill of Rights not all of them contain "person" meaning it could imply to anything (Well the version I looked at didn't http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html) like the 8th Amendment say the following:
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
It does not specifically say anything about persons/people or humans.
Look at the old Napster site; it took a long time to get the site down because at the time it was not doing anything illegal since there was no law prohibiting it since the whole idea was new.
This is probably the same case with centaurs but I hope it will not end in a bad result as Napster, but then again Napster was morally bad while being a centaur is not but I cannot think of anything to relate it with except for that.
Civilization and human being are ignorant when it comes to these matters since human beings have no experience in the matters so when the laws have been written other being have not been taken into account.
I hope that I have no offended anyone in any way; if I have then I apologize.
